Luxury cars sell quickly at Shanghai Auto Show

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-26 18:08:55

Chinanews, Shanghai, Apr. 26 C In only three days after the Shanghai
Auto Show opened to the public, all the luxury cars were sold out. Most
of them were sold at 2-10 million yuan, the Shanghai Morning Post
reported.
At the Bentley exhibition booth, three Bentley cars were marked by a sign
that read sold out. The manufacturer made the three models especially
for the Shanghai Auto Show and all of them were sold in half a day during
the first public open day.
The most expensive Bentley model was an Arnage RL sold at a price of 6.48
million yuan. It was bought by a businessman from Zhejiang. The other two
models, a Continental GTC convertible race car and a four-seat
Continental GTC, were bought by two Shanghainese at a price of 3.58
million yuan and 3.38 million yuan, respectively.
Among the rest of the luxury cars available for sale, a Maybach was
marked with a selling price of 9,000,000 yuan. A staff member from
Mercedes-Benzs China company said that during the Shanghai Auto Show,
many Chinese people came to ask them about the configuration information
and the selling price of the car. In three days, they had sold two units
of such Maybach cars. One of them was bought by money pooled by several
members of one family, who intended to give the car to their father as a
gift.
Ferrari and Maserati brought six models of their cars to the Shanghai
Auto Show this year. Two models were placed only for exhibition and one
was sold even before the auto show began. The other three models, a
Ferrari 430, a Ferrari 599, and a Maserati President, were sold at the
auto show at a price of 2.84 million yuan, 3.76 million yuan and 1.92
million yuan, respectively.
Porsche took nine model cars to attend the show this time. Apart from one
concept model, all the rest of the models were sold out now.
Lamborghini brought two models to the show this time, one being a
MURCIELAGOLP640 marked with a price of 4.38 million yuan and the other a
GALLARDOSPYDER of 3.38 million yuan. Both cars have been ordered.
Spyker displayed three models at the exhibition. One was a SSUVD12
marked with at a price of 5.88 million yuan and the other was a C8D12
model with a selling price of 6.68 million yuan. Both models have been
purchased.

Luoyang marked as starting point of Silk Road

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-16 17:27:27

The Monument Marking the Eastern Starting Point of the Silk Road was
completed at Tangsimen in Luoyang of Henan Province on April 15, with
several hundred people being there to witness the moment of history.

Chinanews, Luoyang, April 16 - The Monument Marking the Eastern Starting
Point of the Silk Road was completed at Tangsimen in Luoyang of Henan
Province on April 15, with several hundred people being there to witness
the moment of history.
The monument is some 3.5 m tall, 1.25 m wide and 0.3 m thick.
Luoyang is one of the most famous ancient capitals of China, and also one
of the oldest. It is said that silk trade with the West in Luoyang
started in the early Shang Dynasty(16th BC-11th BC). Tangsimen stands at
the junction of the ruins of several ancient cities and the Grand Canal
built in the Sui Dynasty (581 - 618). The market places of Luoyang were
well known in the world as early as in the Han Dyansty (206 BC - 220 AD).
Luoyang's glory lay not only in its flourishing business acitivities.
With several royal temples, it also used to be a religious and cultural
center of China.
Currently, China is applying for the inclusion the Silk Road on the
intangible cultural heritage list of the UNESCO, and Luoyang will become
a tourist resort after approval of the application, as it is the starting
point of the Silk Road.

Wage-earners keen on making financial management

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-09 08:47:22

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 9 C 2007 might be considered as an investment
year for the Chinese public. When most people used to queue for a
house, in 2007, they shift to banks and other places eager to buy funds,
stocks, finance management products or insurance products, the Legal
Evening News reported.
Recently, the Finance Research Institute under the State Development and
Reform Commission and the Beijing Liaowang Investment Consulting Co., Ltd
jointly issued the "Survey Report on Chinese Finance Management Products
Buyers in 2007". In order to make this report, the two institutions
issued 50,000 questionnaires and retrieved 2,217. The survey took 5
months to finish. It can be regarded as the most authoritative and most
comprehensive survey report on Chinese investors so far.
The report shows that in terms of age, 80% of finance product buyers are
people over the age of 30. The number of buyers who were born after the
1980s increase considerably, while people who are above the age of 60
also account for 10% of the total number of investors.
The report also shows that 85% of investors work in fields that are
unrelated with finance industry, while people who do work in financial
sector account for only 14.5% of the total buyers. This shows that
finance management has entered into a grassroots level, according to
an expert from the Finance Research Institute under the State Development
and Reform Commission.
The report shows that most investors fall into a group whose annual
disposable family income is around 100,000 yuan. Wage-earners are the
main buyers of financial management products. Information shows that
people with a disposable income of less than 50,000 yuan and people with
a disposable family income of 50,000-100,000 yuan account for 31.6% and
39.4% of the total number of buyers, respectively, and people with a
family income of 100,000-200,000 yuan account for 18.3% of the buyers.
According to economists, this indicates that financial management
products have become popular products among the Chinese public, with
wage-earners being the main buyers group of these products.
When asked why they buy these products, 54% of the respondents say they
want to retain or increase the value of their assets, 24% of the
people buy them for their pension plan, and 10% of them buy them to
meet their childrens educational expenses. Also, a small portion of
people say they buy financial management products to pay for their
medical expenses, to buy a car or a house.

Russian crude oil arrives

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-19 15:15:45

On April 16th, more than 2,000 tons of crude oil imported from Russia was
transported to the railway station of Sinopec Wuhan Oil Chemical Factory
(Sinopec Wuhan). It is the first time that Russian crude oil has arrived
in a Mainland Chinese city. The train arrived after transiting through
Inner Mongolia; crude oil from Yukos has now formally explored an avenue
for international oil transportation leading to Wuhan. In the future,
more crude oil from Russia will be transported to Wuhan. In the past,
Sinopec Wuhan imported crude oil only by sea. With hikes in the price of
oil, the increase of supply channels will improve the ability of Sinopec
Wuhan to ensure product oil supply in Hubei Province.

season.

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-11 13:33:18

Chinanews, Apr. 11 - Yueyang City, Hunan Province will hold the
International Dragon Boat Race on June 11th, the Dragon Boat Festival of
the lunar calendar, on the Miluo River, where Qu Yuan drowned himself. In
addition to the boat race, the city will host various events such as
business promotion, tourism, arts performances and forums.
Yueyang, the "City of the Dragon Boat," and the Miluo River which runs
through it, are the cradles of dragon boat culture. On May 5th of the
lunar calendar, 278 BC, Qu Yuan, the patriotic poet, drowned himself in
the Miluo River. In order to commemorate the poet and his world-famous
celebrity, Yueyang City held ten consecutive international dragon boat
races in the 1980s and 1990s. More than 100 teams from all over the world
participate in the competitions.
The Yueyang government will invite dragon boat teams from more than
twenty countries including the U.S., the U.K., Australia as well as the
Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao regions to the 2005 competition.

Export tax rebate on steel billet abolished

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-04 11:29:28

Chinnews, Apr. 3 - China has nullified a 13% export tax rebates on steel
billet from April 1st. Insiders believe that this measure will slow down
China's large volume of iron ore imports.
China has seen rapid growth of its steel and iron output in recent years,
increasing import dependency on ore sharply, up to 50%.
On Mar. 28th, Nippon Steel Corporation, a Japanese steel giant, signed a
supply deal with world's largest iron ore supplier, Brazil CVRD, which
included a 71.5% hike in ore prices. Baosteel Group, representative of
China's steel plants to the negotiation, was forced to accept this bad
news. Insiders predict that these price hikes will cost the development
of China's steel industry another RMB.3 billion, and domestic iron ore
will undoubtedly see great demand.
Experts believe that the significant effect of the export rebate
exemption will be to alleviate the tight domestic supply of iron ore,
thus restricting large-scale domestic import to some extent. Most of this
iron ore is exported to foreign countries as low-end products after a
process of high energy consuming and polluting manufacture.

five-year transition period for foreign-funded enterprises as income

integration, primarily the self-centered political considerations of some
departments. The non-preferential income tax may be officially

Japan's twisted textbooks spark anger

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-26 16:42:30

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, Mar. 26 - Drafts of a new edition of a history textbook used in
Japanese schools have again sparked waves of criticism.
Japan's Asian neighbours including China and the Republic of Korea say
they have been "deeply hurt" by the "twisted history" in the school books
which "again" fail to mention the atrocities the Japanese committed
during World War II.
The People's Daily, one of the largest circulated newspapers in China,
published an article on Friday, saying the books "greatly hurt the
feeling of the Asian people" and expressed outrage in an editorial.
The paper cited ROK's decision to internationalize the Japanese history
textbook issue as "a very necessary measure," saying "it is a powerful
counter blow to Japanese right wing's aggressive action."
The paper said the current situation indicated that it is hard to resolve
the textbook issue within the bilateral jurisdiction and it would be a
smart choice to go to the international level.
It noted that 2005 is the 60th anniversary of World War II "an
anti-fascist war" and said it would be "very significant to let the
international community learn more about the truth of Japanese invasion
history."
Overseas Chinese are also planning to buy an entire page advertisement in
New York Times, opposing Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the United
Nations Security Council, reported another popular Chinese newspaper,
China Youth Daily.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been arguing in recent days against
Japan's bid on the Internet, demanding Japan heed its past atrocities
first.
The ROK Government said it will raise a proposal about the textbooks at
international conferences, including the conference of United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It has said it will
take other measures to force Japan to correct the wrongs.
The textbooks are inspected every four years in April by the Japanese
Government. They are used during history lessons at all middle schools in
Japan.
The latest edition of the disputed textbook, which was written by a group
of "right-wing" Japanese academics, was approved in 2001 for use in high
schools - despite strong protests from neighbouring countries.
ROK non-governmental organizations vowed to work together with its
counterparts in Japan as well as the international community to prevent
the approval of the new textbook.
There are media reports from the ROK detailing the controversy. US
representative Lane Evans said on Thursday that he and 13 other
representatives are working hard to push forward the resolution calling
on Japan to apologize for the sexual enslavement of young women in Asia
who were used as "comfort women" by Japanese troops during World War II.
In the press briefing held in congress the same day, which was also
witnessed by some former "comfort women," Evans said Japan is one of the
leading countries that has not shown any sincerity in taking the
responsibility for its historical actions.
He said it was quite shocking to see the Japanese Government has not
fully apologized and compensated the "comfort women" 60 years after World
War II.

The New Xiushui Market to open this week

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-14 14:39:57

Chinanews, Mar. 14 - The new Xiushui market will open officially on March
19th. Yesterday, the developer promised that goods sold in the new
Xiushui would cost substantially less than those sold in the old Xiushui.
On the 19th, the subway leading to the new Xiushui will open officially
and visitors will not have to leave the station to get to the market;
rather, they will be able to walk directly in.
It has been reported that, in order to add to the attraction of the new
Xiushui, merchants will advertise surprisingly low prices in the first
week after opening. The developer also said that low prices will never
mean inferior products being sold at the Beijing establishment.
Starting this year, the new Xiushui and Beijing Capital Tourism Group
have created exciting new tourist routes that include the market. The
developer of the new Xiushui added that because of this joint effort, the
number of visitors to the new Xiushui would increase by four to five
million every year. In order to make it convenient for foreign visitors
to go shopping, the China Banking Regulatory Commission gave special
approval to the new Xiushui, allowing household businesses to be the
first to accept foreign currency payment by credit card.

Han Ping, Representative to the National People's Congress and Director
of the Bank of China's banking management department, said on Tuesday
that a network linking various banking organizations in China to share
information on consumer credit would be realized by year's end. A
"blacklist" will be developed and will include the names of people who

Hong Kong's unemployment rate drops to a 3-year low

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-22 12:35:49

Chinanews, Hong Kong, Feb.21 (By Fang Qingmu) - Hong Kong's employment
situation continues to improve. The latest statistics released by the
Hong Kong SAR revealed that Hong Kong's unemployment rate declined from
last October to December's 6.5% to last November to this January's 6.4%,
the lowest in the last 3 years.
On Feb.21 Tang Ying-yen, Hong Kong SAR's financial secretary, said that
in the past year 100,000 more people were employed in Hong Kong,
indicating continuous improvement of the labor market. However, as Hong
Kong's economic structure is in transition, the issue of employment in
the future would present a challenge to all concerned. The Hong Kong SAR
government will work closely with all sectors of society to contribute to
a prosperous economy and to create more employment opportunities.
As for Hong Kong's employment prospect this year, Tang Ying-yen said he
was prudently optimistic. He also believed that Hong Kong's economy would
continue to change for the better. As for the tourism industry, the labor
market there would continually improve owing to the opening of the Disney
theme park.

Beijing residents rush to get meningitis vaccine

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-04 14:21:01

On February 3rd 2005, many Beijing residents brought their children, who
are home on vacation, to the Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and
Control to receive "Group A and C" cerebrospinal meningitis vaccine
injection. Many adults also rushed to the hospital to receive the vaccine
injection as a safety precaution. This resulted in long queues in the
hospital. Experts mentioned that there were sufficient supplies of the
vaccines, and residents did not have to be too panicky and fight over
vaccine injections. On February 2nd, Beijing hospitals began to offer
vaccination for "Group A and C" meningitis to the public.

G7 meeting expected to find it hard to force RMB appreciation

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-01 16:20:44

Chinanews, Feb. 1 - At the Group of Seven Leading Industrial Countries
(G7) Meeting of Finance Ministers to be held on Feb 4th and 5th in
London, finance ministers from the seven countries will once again
remember to talk about the RMB exchange rate. However, the Chinese
government has already set the tone for its currency policies this year
-- to further improve the RMB exchange rate mechanism and keep the RMB
exchange rate relatively stable at a reasonable and balanced level. The
G7 talks will likely yield no concrete action.
Huang Ju, vice premier of the State Council, reemphasized recently that
the exchange rate system of the RMB would be revisited after the
completion of economic restructuring and the banking system reform.
Senior Chinese financial officials such as Zhou Xiaochuan have made it
clear on various occasions a few days ago that China's exchange rate
policy would not change because of outside pressure.
Market analysts generally think that the G7 meeting this time will not
come to any resolutions on urging a RMB appreciation. The
communiqufollowing this meeting will likely reiterate the same
statement of the previous two meetings, and appeal to China for a more
flexible exchange rate system.
In addition, the Report on Steady Promotion of a Market-based Exchange
Rate released by the People's Bank of China on Jan 31, 2005 pointed out
that China would continue to promote a stable market-based interest rate
system, loosen the restrictions on minimum original deposit, gradually
realize the deposit interest rate marketization and further simplify the
management of small-sum foreign currency deposits in domestic banks. At
the same time, China will strengthen its effort in building the interest
rate administration system around the Central Bank for better interest
rate adjustment and control.

Why are Chinese disinclined to show wealth?

www.chinanews.cn 2005-01-27 13:53:17

Chinanews, Jan. 26 - Not only are most Chinese inclined to hide their
wealth, they even insist they do not have money.
The disinclination to show wealth has been ingrained in the Chinese
culture since ancient times. People today are becoming even more private
about their income. Psychologists believe this attitude derives from
China's thousands of years of cultural tradition, evidenced in proverbs
like "a prominent bird gets shot" and "a blossoming tree will be
eventually destroyed". They summarize the essence of Chinese social
experience, and reflect certain characteristics of Chinese society to
some degree.
Exerting a profound influence on Chinese culture for thousands of years,
Confucius' doctrine of the Golden Mean promotes a humble, calm way of
life. Thus formed the Chinese people's unique psychological quality of
disliking self-publicity.
Since Qin Shihuang, the first Qin emperor (248 BC to 206 BC), unified
China 2000 years ago, China has mostly been a unified country. In this
relatively stable society, there was little competition and no basis for
comparison. In this environment, ancient people did not need to reveal
their wealth at all.
Chinese people's unwillingness to show wealth also has a physiological
reason. Scientists found more dehydrogenates in Chinese livers than
westerners' through studies of intoxicated people from various countries.
This explains why alcohol poisoning occurs much less frequently in
Chinese even though the alcohol content of China's "white spirit" far
exceeds that of foreign liquors. The existence of dehydrogenation enzymes
in the human brain may have to do with the fact that the Chinese are
better at controlling their moods than Westerners.
Cultural traditions and life styles can also have an impact on brain
structure. The cultural traditions, conventions, living habits and
attitudes that Chinese have inherited through generations cause gradual
genic and neural changes. The accumulation of such quantitative changes
eventually leads to qualitative changes, or gene mutation. When the
mutated genes were inherited, the disinclination towards wealth exposure
