I'd suggest email to instructors at some top universities. Ask what text they use for intro
courses.

Some titles I used or heard of
Spoken Standard Chinese/Written Standard Chinese vols 1, 2 Huang and Stimson
(I used this in the 80s, and it was used at Yale, where it was written, as recently as 6 years ago)

Integrated Chinese

Chinese Odyssey
Author: Xueying Wang, Li-chuang Chi, and Liping Feng

I haven't looked at so I have no opinion of Integrated Chinese, or Chinese Odyssey.

This would be a good project, which I don't have that much interest or time to do:
Assemble a list of texts used in years 1, 2, and 3 at various universities
Columbia, Yale, Middlebury, Seton Hall, Michigan, etc.

Noted added: Actually I've started this project, sent some emails. I'll post when I have a useful
table

How about a "中F" symbol? Perhaps with a curly scientific "f" centred in the "中". I had a
couple of attempts (attached). Maybe the background should be the lightest blue used on the forum
pages...

French and very little German. I began German self-study but never really continued. Hope to get
around to Latin and Greek in a few years. This is all mainly for study and reading.

You can do it via text message. If you're not in China, sign up online during off-peak hours of
11pm to 9am Beijing Time.

I used the url suggested here,received a registration number and downloaded the English version of
QQ (2005, Vista compatible). However, when I launch the QQ program and get the sign-in screen (see
attachment), after I input my QQ number and password (selected as part of the program download
process), I cannot actually sign in to QQ. Also, the sign in screen cannot be expanded, in case
there are other buttons which I cannot see in the reduced view. Any suggestions are welcomed.

reportedly malware at best, I connect (with al my IM's) through Pidgin.

Hi all. I'm taking a group voice class this term, and for our final solo we get to choose our own
song to perform. I thought it would be really cool to do something in Chinese. Does anyone know
where I can find some Chinese sheet music (in Chinese)? Also, what are some more traditional
Chinese songs you like that might be fun to sing (I think my teacher would frown on a pop
selection). I sing tenor / baritone. Thanks.

Win XP (English version) and Chinese Input - hangs aplication

I have an issue on my laptop. Using the standard Windows XP support for East Asian Languages to
type Chinese via Pinyin Input, it always worked fine then suddenly, using the usual Alt-Shift to
change to Simplified Chinese Input, I can only enter the 1st. 2 characters then it locks/hangs and
Task Manager shows that prog is using 98% or 99% CPU.

This happens with Word, Explorer and Windows Live Messenger, in fact any attempt to input Chinese.

So far I have tried removing the East Asian Languages option then adding it back again, no change.

Very reluctant to do a complete Windows reinstall/repair without first getting to understand what
went wrong. Anyone else encountered this - any suggestions?

(There is no Event Log error when the app hangs, - once I kill the app via Task Manager a hungapp
error on the app exe file name can be seen)

You say you removed the East Asian languages option, but what did you do: just uncheck that box?

If so, I'd suggest going to the details page and separately uninstalling whatever Chinese and
other Asian language options you've got, then reboot and try installing them again.

If it's a particular problem with the MS IME, you can also try installing the Google Pinyin IME:

It's a bit better than the MS IME in any event.

Now I have tried removing the keyboard for Chinese input from the Details section as well us
un-installing all East Asian language, reboot, then a re-install of all Chinese setup. But to no
avail, still hangs the app after 2 characters of input.

Will look at the Google IME but will it work for all things in Windows, eg with Windows IME you
can create file names in Chinese, etc, use it in Live Messenger, Outlook Express and Word. Can
Google IME do all that?

Yes, of course. Google Pinyin is quite fantastic, 100x better than Window's terrible default one.
It's fast, reliable and has an excellent pinyin=>character prediction scheme.

which tone does 叉 take in 劈叉, 横叉, and 竖叉? i've heard it sound like 4th tone, but i
didnt think 叉 ever has the 4th tone. it can have 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. i would guess 3rd in this
case?

can someone provide the proper tone marks for the three words? thanks!

May be a little help:
According "New Age Chinese-English Dictionary" by The Commercial Press,
叉（cha1):
1) fork (noun); 2) fork (verb) 3) ' X ' mark
叉（cha2):
(dialect) block, jam (verb)
叉（cha3):
to part (legs) to form a fork shape
叉（cha4):
see "劈叉" (pi3 cha4)
and 劈叉sports) do the splits.

From above, we know 叉 is 4th tone in 劈叉, and I think also 4th in 横叉 and 竖叉 if they
mean specific splits with the same concept as 劈叉.

Maybe I'm going off on another of my irrelevant tangents, but I often hear doing the splits said
as 劈腿(many girls at the cram school I work at go to dance class).

well, in some shaolin gongfu forms there is a move called 劈腿 where you just kick your leg
straight in the air, vertically. which can also be a dance/cheerleading move i guess.

i've only heard the splits as 劈叉. then more specifically side and front splits as 横叉 and
竖叉.

Perhaps we're entering another area in which Taiwan differs from China, or parts of China anyway.
Students at my cram school will say 劈腿 and then even demonstrate the painful looking position.
A native speaker I know who speaks fairly standard Mandarin, (not really scary Taiwanese Mandarin)
said she has never used or heard 劈叉. But anyways, it looks like people in different areas say
it in different ways.

劈腿 seems to have an additional meaning that's sexual, but that's not the direction I'm going

How do you know if you don't look Currently the longest thread on the main 中文角 page (with
the exception of the jokes thread) was started by someone who at the time had only been learning
Chinese for half a year. Combined with tools like chinesepera-kun, you might find it easier than
you think.

I also agree with gougou. Feel free to test the waters, and if separating posts out into
beginner/intermediate/advanced is something that proves popular and gets regular use, then it's a
lot easier to justify splitting it out into separate sub-forums.

Actually I used to go in and have a look but I still have huge vocabulary gaps so a lot of times

You may wish to take a look at post #1 for what is "Chinese" for the purpose of this poll. In
short if you consider yourself a native speaker, then you are (this is just a poll not an academic
study). You can take ISO's view too if you like.

I've been asked to help someone to chose a textbook for studying English, but I wouldn't know
where to start without going to a bookshop and looking at books, which is far too time-consuming.

Basically looking for a general textbook series that'll cover a bit of everything, probably
designed for classroom use but also suitable for self-study. Something like the Headway series for
anyone who knows that, although that's not available in China, bar as an import (I think, if it is
available here that would probably be perfect).

I remember a couple from my teaching days but never actually used them so don't know if they're
any good or not. Plus my memory doesn't go as far as names - New Interchange? Something like that?

Any of our active teachers got any suggestions?

One I remember being popular from when I was teaching is New Concept English. I don't know what
the content is like though.

Popular series include: Longman's, New Interchange, New Concept (written in 1967 and still used )
Cambridge, and training center specific ones can be good if you can get ahold of them. ( I have a
set of EF ) It can also depend on the age group you are teaching too. There is a myriad of
chinese-centric produced books, but at least 2 of those that I have contain some engrish or other
mistakes. I have found even small local bookstores will have a section with at least the student
edition of several english training books, it may ultimately be worth spending an hour or two
anyways to peruse them before making a final decision. If I had to suggest general texts I guess
I'd go with Cambridge or New Interchange

Yep. NCE is widely used and there is a plethora of transcripts, electronic versions, and audio
files widely available to download as an augment. I am surprised they haven't heard of it. Or
maybe they have and are looking for something else. Content is fairly solid and systematic albeit
rather typical and boring in many ways.

Roddy, you didn't say what age the student is. However, I'll assume they are adult or at least
teenage. It would also help to know if they have studied any English before but I'll assume they
haven't.

Interchange English - Published by Cambridge - is the range I use most for my own classes. I've
used it for two years now both at university and at private schools. If studying on one's own
without a teacher then I recommend the student to get the full range of books, especially the
workbook, to compliment the students book. There are DVD's that go with the course plus there are
exercises on the Interchange web site that you can work through.

The vocabulary used in Interchange is useful and builds systematically. I'd say it's a more
practical vocabulary for modern English than the NCE range (below) gives. The grammar is clearly
explained but only briefly and only in English. If you don't have a teacher, you might not
understand the the grammar sections in this book. On the up side, the grammar builds logically
throughout the range of books. The books are well balance with a mix of reading, writing,
listening and talking exercises. Though you would need to be in a classroom setting to make the
most of the talking sections.

New Concept English - This is the standard at every school. It has it's good points and some
distinct bad points. On the plus side it's very thorough. Every element of grammar is covered by
the time you finish book 2. That is also one of it's down sides. It can sometimes spend too long
teaching some rather special grammar in book 2 that could have been left till book 4. The books
have explanations in both English and Chinese so you can read it yourself however, I'd recommend
still taking classes as you will learn faster. The pictures in the books lack the visual appeal of
some other books but are functional. There is a bit too much emphasis on reading and writing
skills and not enough conversation. This is especially true of books 3 and 4 which are basically
just reading comprehension exercises.

I have used some other books, but the are for either young children or for specialist topics or I
don't like them. If your student has already studied some English before and is just wanting to
improve, then I'd give a different set of recommendations to that above.

Allow me to use Chinese here, actually we call the mode of adding "r" to end the pronunciation as
"儿化音“， literally means use the sound of "r" to modify the pronunciation, note that only
to modify not to replace, so I don't agree to call it contraction, actually it's not, when people
say "wo gaor ni le" they don't intent to use "告” for “告诉”， they still mean to use
the word "告诉“ only the pronunciation's changed.
If it is contraction, how to explain the case of adding "r" to only one-charater word, if a girl
named "燕”，in pinyin it is "yan", but daily we will call her "yanr".

In your example the n sound (the nasal) undergoes contraction doesn't it? I mean you don't really
say 'yanr', do you, it's more like 'ye-r'. Maybe the vowel is a little bit nasalized.

I think what casual was saying, was, that even though you may not hear the n in the name, it is
not a contraction. It is just a characteristic of the accent. The speaker is still THINKING the n,
just not using it. If a Beijinger were to put on another accent, they would say the n sound,
whilst they would skip it in their normal Beijing accent. A contraction would be when part of a
word is lost, despite the accent being used.

I knew nothing about 'contractions' before this thread, so I'm just assuming here.

I would say that if the Beijing speaker is in some sense "thinking" the 'n' then it is indeed a
contraction. And also if the vowel has any sort of nasal quality to it at all.

If it's just a case of the 'n' being swopped for an 'r' then it is *not* a contraction. But I'm
not happy with that, because my impression of erhua, like Casual's, is that it involves adding
something on, not exchanging something.

Something is added on, and as a result something disappears. It happens in that order, in my
opinion.

About the er hua, I don't think it's a contraction, as not all 儿 words, contrary to popular
belief, take out the previous syllable entirely. Take 爱好儿 for example. From the native
speakers I've heard pronouncing it, the 'er' here does not completely 'take over' the 'hao', there
is in fact a small gap between the two - effectively there isn't much of a contraction at all.

yep it is the last one 风味鸡油辣椒 and I have been sitting here all afternoon trying to get
up the courage to try it again knowing that the big pieces might be chicken lips or bones and
wondering if I should crunch them or politely put them in my napkin.

Take it easy. I think those big pieces you mentioned above might be chicken meat with bones, like
those you might have in KFC or McDonal's.(But Loaganma doesn't deep fry them, and that's it.) Are

I am sorry to have to add such a posting but I am certain now that my disposition for eating
anything in a jar is having a serious effect upon my wellbeing and I am not sure if I can carry
on. (actually I think I am very good at carrying on!! )

...there is only a tablespoon of it left, ...what am I going to do ....I live many many miles from
a Chinese Grocery, and well I am just not sure I can do without this jar of chilli chicken lips
(and other organs).

IT WAS BLOODY YUM!!!!!

If I made soup stock then I would add a tablespoon, if I made wontons (pan stickers) then I mixed
the Loaganma with the fillings, I used it as a sambal on noodle soups, I marinated chicken in it
then pan fried it, I used it as a condiment on barbecued pork, and for a snack it was great in
noodles with fried egg.

Ohhh my fat little belly ....what am I going to feed you next.

Next time I go to the Chinese grocery, 我要买三瓶

Let me take a look at it. Can probably figure out what is going on.

That being said, I honestly think you'll get a much more usable site using the automatic wrapping
that the WordPress plugin provides. It breaks up the annotating span tags at every ASCII entry, so
you'd have two bits to annotate rather than one, and the response time will be faster.

Was defensively stripping tags before processing text. Have disabled this for now. But really
think you should be marking up only the Chinese content for submission. I'll send you an email
with the code that will do this automatically.

Hi all, I have been thinking about getting another tattoo, its only in the thought stages at the
moment... just mulling over some ideas and was wondering if anyone can help me translate the below
into Chinese. Is it possible to use four 2 character combinations?

Banish Uncertainty; Affirm Strength; Hold Resolve; Expect Death

You might recognise this from my signature... its something that strikes a cord with me... thanks

I recommend "袪疑" for the first.(I suppose the "uncertainty" means "unsure of sth")
And "盼终" for the forth.(I only know these character means death and I choose the one which I
think is the most proper:死，薨，崩，毙，逝，殒，殁，夭，终)
my english is not very good so I can't know the exact meaning of the other two words.

Hmm,it's just a personal opinion.

I kind of enjoy reading the selections in the HSK reading section - decently interesting short to
medium length articles on a variety of topics. I'm assuming they write everything in the HSK
themselves, but perhaps this is similar reading material online(for native speakers) I could read
every day? I read articles on Baidu news sometimes, but find most of them incredibly boring.

interesting. It's a bit like Time magazine.

Chinanews, July 18 �C China would not appreciate or depreciate RMB with
one-off administrative measure, Zheng Jingping, a spokesman for the
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Tuesday during a press
conference on national economic operation in the first half of this year.
Regarding the exchange rates of RMB, Zheng said the reform of RMB
exchange rate producing mechanism in the past year was successful. China
began its currency reform on July 21 of last year.
RMB exchange rates have witnessed appreciation during the one-year
fluctuation of the past year. By the end of June, RMB exchange rates had
increased by 3.5% from July 21 of last year, including the one-off
appreciation of 2% at the beginning of the reform.
Zheng said the current RMB exchange rate producing mechanism had reversed
the imbalance of the China's import and export trades, playing a positive
role in the stable economic operation.
Zheng said the mechanism needed further improvement but one-off
administrative appreciation or devaluation of RMB would not happen any
more as Premier Wen had said, i.e. there will be no more surprises on
currency adjustments.
Zheng said Chinese economy had been an important part of world economy
and any change in Chinese economy or financing would affect the operation
of world economy and financing.
"Speculators will not achieve their goal or gain from making bets on RMB
appreciation," Zheng said.

Chinanews, Beijing, July 13 �C The latest information published by the
authorities showed that during the first half of this year, China's trade
surplus surged up to 61.44 billion US dollars. It is expected that the
trade surplus for the whole year might be even more than last year's
record high of 101.2 billion US dollars. However, analysts cautioned that
China's huge trade surplus figure might not reflect the real situation.
Zhang Yansheng, head of the Institute of Macroeconomic Research under the
State Development and Reform Commission said that this incredibly high
trade surplus figure might include some speculative investments boosted
by the RMB appreciation expectation. ��China's trade surplus figure might
include some huge capital inflow into China under the name of trade,�� he
said.
Senior economist from the Standard Chartered Bank Wang Zhihao said that
due to fake declaration of the goods value, and transferred pricing,
China's real trade surplus figure might be 35 billion US dollars for the
past six months. That is to say, about 67 billion US dollars of the fund
that does not belong to trade category are included in this trade surplus
figure.
Earlier, Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai said that in 2005, 58% of the
Chinese export volume was actually created by foreign-funded enterprises.
Of the 101.2 billion US dollars of trade surplus, 50.7% came from foreign
enterprises. He indicated that China's ever-increasing trade surplus was
actually caused by a global industrial shift, in which goods were
manufactured in Asia and consumed in Europe and the North America region.
In the first half of this year, China's processing trade volume reached
374.83 billion US dollars, up 22.6% from last year, and accounting for
nearly half of the total trade volume in the same period.
Zhang pointed out that the growing demand outside China had also pushed
up China's trade volume. In addition, due to the rapid-growing production
capacity in recent years, it is only natural that many domestic
enterprises should try to sell their goods in overseas market, he said.

July 1 - China has discovered H5N1 bird flu virus in poultry in the
northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, the Ministry of Agriculture
(MOA) has said.
The National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory on Thursday discovered
the H5N1 bird flu virus from the samples collected at the Xuanhe town of
Zhongwei city in Ningxia, the MOA said on Friday evening.
Upon the case was identified, the MOA immediately sent expert teams to
Zhongwei to control any possible outbreak.
An emergency mechanism has been launched and the local veterinary
departments have set up examination stations to disinfect people and
vehicles into and out of the affected area.

Chinanews, June 20 - Haier continued to top a brand list with 63.989
billion yuan (US$7.99 billion) of brand value, followed by Lenovo, China
Mobile and CCTV, all with a brand value of over 60 billion yuan (US$ 7.5
billion), according to the latest list of "China's Top 500 Most Valuable
Brands" in 2006 exclusively compiled by World Brand Lab (WBL) unveiled
recently.
The 2006 "China's Top 500 Most Valuable Brands" is the third ranking
conducted by WBL targeting Chinese brands. Being an international and
professional brand research organization, WBL is chaired by Robert
Mundell, Nobel laureate in Economics in 1999 and father of the Euro. WBL
also invited experts and consultants from top universities in the world
such as Harvard, Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University
of Cambridge and University of Oxford.
Steven Woolgar, a professor from Oxford University's Business School,
revealed that over 200 China-made products top the world in terms of
output, but China is short of world-class brands.
It was learned that in the list of top 500 brands in the world in 2006,
which was also complied by WBL, American brands took 245 spots or 49%,
the largest percentage. France stood at No.2 as 46 French brands
constituted 9.2% of the brands chosen. Japan came in at third place with
44 brands accounting for 8.8% of the total.
As to Chinese brands, however, only six domestic brands, Haier, Lenovo,
CCTV, Changhong, China Mobile and China Railway Engineering Corp. were
included in the list, indicating an evident gap between China and
developed countries.

Chinanews, Beijing, June 9 (By Wei Xi) - The State Administration of
Foreign Exchange (SAFE) adjusted part of its foreign exchange management
policy on outbound investment on the 8th, and the new regulation will
remove foreign exchange quota on outbound investment.
In recent years, SAFE has gradually loosened foreign exchange
restrictions on outbound investment and issued a series of regulations to
remove risk assessment on outbound investment, abolished the system that
domestic investors must put down a guarantee deposit that they will remit
their profit back to China on their outbound investment, carried out
experimental foreign exchange management reform on outbound investment
and give pilot regions certain foreign exchange quota to allow local
enterprises with offshore investment to use their profit for additional
investment or reinvestment overseas, and allowed enterprises to purchase
foreign exchange or use foreign exchange loans from domestic banks for
outbound investment.
Besides removing foreign exchange quotas on outbound investment starting
July 1st, this policy adjustment also allows investors in China to make
advance foreign exchange remittances upon approval of relevant
authorities if they need to pay for expenditures related to their
offshore investment.
Relevant SAFE official said this adjustment aims to consummate support
policies to encourage outbound investment, facilitate investors in China
to carry out direct offshore investment and transnational operations, and
promote effective implementation of China's outbound investment
industrial policy.
SAFE also stressed that outbound investment must accord with China's
industrial policy and obtain the approval of relevant authorities. At the
same time, SAFE will strengthen examination and appraisal, statistics and
monitoring on foreign exchange purchases and payment of outbound
investment to prevent and control offshore risks while facilitating
outbound investment.

SCO is not "NATO in the east"

Chinanews, June 7 - The sixth session of the Council of Heads of Member
States of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held in
Shanghai on June 15, and the world has paid close attention to this
summit. SCO Secretary General Zhang Deguang stated during a recent
interview that the view of SCO as "NATO in the East" has no foundation in
fact.
Zhang indicated that SCO's purpose, principle and activities have won
wide appreciation and support around the globe, although a few people
have different opinions, misunderstanding and even hostility towards SCO
mainly due to the lack of understanding. SCO never aims to confront any
party, and its goal has nothing to do with becoming a military
organization. SCO is engaged in multi-field cooperation in China and
all-sided exchanges in the international arena. Even when it comes to
collaboration in security, SCO does not posture itself against the US or
NATO as some people have claimed. It has no imaginary or imagined enemy;
real enemies of the organization are terrorism, splittism and extremism
as well as poverty, ignorance and backwardness.
In addition, Zhang deemed it quite normal to have invited President
Ahmadi-Najad of Iran, an observer state of SCO, to attend this summit.
Zhang stressed that inviting the leader of an observer state to the
summit was a common decision made by all member states, and there is no
contradiction between Irani President participating in the meeting and
international efforts to solve the nuclear problem in Iran. SCO stands
for the peaceful solution of Iran's nuclear issue through negotiations.

June 2 - Six world powers agreed Thursday to offer Iran a new choice of
rewards if it gives up suspect nuclear activities or punishment if it
refuses.
"There are two paths ahead," British Foreign Secretary Margaret Becket
said in announcing agreement among the United States, Britain, France,
Germany, Russia and China on a package deal for Iran that carries the
threat of United Nations sanctions.
The package would be on the table for a proposed new round of bargaining
with Tehran over what the West calls a nuclear program that could produce
a bomb.
The U.S., in a major policy shift, agreed this week to join those talks
under certain conditions. It would be the first major public negotiations
between the two countries in more than a quarter century.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with the foreign ministers from
the European nations that led talks with Iran that stalled last year.
Also present were representatives of Russia and China, which might join
in any future talks with Iran.
A short statement issued by foreign ministers from the six powers and the
European Union did not mention economic sanctions �� the punishment or
deterrent favored by the United States and that Iran has tried hard to
avoid.
The powers agreed privately, however, that Iran could face tough U.N.
Security Council sanctions if it fails to give up the enrichment of
uranium and other disputed nuclear activities, U.S. officials said.
Diplomats feared Iran would immediately reject any invitation to bargain
if the threat of sanctions was explicit, officials involved in the
discussions said on condition of anonymity because the seven-party
negotiations were private.
The foreign ministers' statement threatens unspecified "further steps" in
the Security Council.
The group's statement also contained no details of the incentives to be
offered to Iran in the coming days. Diplomats previously have said the
package includes help developing legitimate nuclear power plants and
various economic benefits.
"We are prepared to resume negotiations should Iran resume suspension of
all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities," as previously
required by the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, Becket said.
If Iran returned to the talks stalled since last year, "we would also
suspend action in the Security Council," Becket said.
The Security Council, which can levy mandatory global sanctions and back
its mandates with military force, has been reviewing Iran's case for two
months.
"At this crucial stage, it is very important that none of the sides
involved in the situation makes any sharp movements that would create a
threat to the real prospect of using the chance to reach agreement,"
ITAR-Tass quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as saying before
talks began in Vienna.
Iran insists its nuclear work is peaceful and aimed at developing a new
energy source.
Iran's foreign minister welcomed the idea of direct talks, but rebuffed
the U.S. condition that Tehran must put uranium enrichment on hold before
talks can begin.
"Iran welcomes dialogue under just conditions but won't give up our
rights," the state-run Iranian television quoted Foreign Minister
Manouchehr Mottaki as saying Thursday.
At the White House, President Bush warned that the confrontation would
end up at the U.N. Security Council if Iran continues to enrich uranium.
"If they continue their obstinance, if they continue to say to the world,
`We really don't care what your opinion is,' then the world is going to
act in concert," Bush said.
Bush said he got a "positive response" in a telephone conversation
Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding, "We expect Russia
to participate in the United Nations Security Council. We'll see whether
or not they agree to do that."
Bush also spoke about Iran on Thursday with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
He revealed little about that conversation, saying, "They understood our
strategy."
The shift in U.S. tactics was meant to offer the Iranians a last chance
to avoid punishing sanctions, and to let the United States assert that it
was willing to exhaust every opportunity to resolve the Iranian impasse
without force.
Previous talks among Iran, Britain, France and Germany foundered last
year. European diplomats and others said the United States was partly at
fault, arguing that it alone carries the global weight to force Iran to
bargain in good faith and to make any agreement stick.
The U.S. offer for talks is conditioned on Iran suspending its enrichment
of uranium and related activities and allowing inspections to prove it.
Uranium enrichment can make fuel for nuclear power reactors or the
fissile core of warheads.
European nations and the Security Council have demanded the same thing,
but Iran has refused to comply.

May 22 - As a major player on everyone's lips, China, the world's
fastest-growing economy, is set to overtake the United States as the
biggest economy globally by 2050, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers
report.
Although China's growth is expected to slow from the current high rate,
it will surpass the United States based on purchasing power parity by
2050 and lead seven other emerging countries to overtake the Group of
Seven, or G7, as the world's biggest economic bloc, the report said.
Purchasing Power Parity, or PPP, is a currency conversion measure that
uses a common currency and equalize the purchasing power of different
currencies. In other words, the PPP eliminates the differences in price
levels between countries in the process of conversion.
The Emerging Seven economies, or E7 as the PwC coined it, will by 2050 be
around 25 percent larger than the current G7 when measured in US dollar
terms at the market exchange rates or around 75 percent larger in PPP
terms.
The E7 includes "BRIC" - Brazil, Russia, India and China - plus
Indonesia, Mexico and Turkey.
In contrast, the E7 is currently only around 20 percent the size of the
G7 at market exchange rates and around 75 percent of its size in PPP
terms.
"China and India are the two important markets to drive up the E7
economies," said John Hawksworth, head of the macroeconomics unit of
PricewaterouseCoopers based in London, and the author of the report, in
Shanghai.
China, despite its projected slowdown in market growth, is forecast to be
around 95 percent the size of the United States at market exchange rates
by 2050 or about 40 percent larger in PPP terms.
China's economy expanded 10.2 percent in the first quarter after soaring
9.5 percent last year.
Growing rapidly as a major player, China is also burdened with some
problems which may hinder its growth.
The declining working age population, or those between 16 years and 50
years, will be one disadvantage for China while India, a relatively young
economy, will gain from its growing working population.
Better education, higher energy efficiency and the development of the
country's financial sectors are suggestions offered for a healthy
economic expansion.
"China needs to diversify its capital markets besides focusing on the
banking sector," he said, adding that the securities and corporate bond
sectors are areas where expansion is pending.

China's first underwater terra-cotta warriors and horses museum was
completed on May 16. It is located in the deep pool in the west of the
Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) culture scenic spot and is an important part of
Xuzhou City's Han Dynasty Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses Museum. It will
present the panorama of the Han Dynasty terra-cotta warriors and horses
pit to the world. In 2005, the Xuzhou Municipal Government decided to
build an underwater museum on the site of two cavalry pits. The
underwater museum is composed of two cup-shaped buildings in the east and
west. The west exhibition hall displays the original appearance of the
Pit No. 5 while the east hall showcases the battle array of the Han
Dynasty cavalry as well as China's ancient cavalry corps.

The two-star Jianguomen Hotel, situated south of the Chinese capital's
prime embassy district, is about one kilometer from Beijing's older

BEIJING - Yao Ming has urged his Chinese teammate, Yi Jianlian, to hold
talks with the Milwaukee Bucks, amid a stand-off between the star recruit
and the NBA club who picked him in last week's draft.

"I think as an international player, at the very beginning he should try
to get in touch (with the Bucks)," Yao told Chinese reporters here
Tuesday, referring to Yi and his management team's refusal to meet with
the Bucks.

Yao, who has plenty of experience in the NBA as the Houston Rockets' star
centre, urged his 19-year-old countryman to ensure he acts in his own
best interests.

"Yi must walk his own road," Yao said.

"Chinese players are very modest, but this does not mean that he should
not make his own feelings known."

Yi was chosen by the Bucks as the sixth pick in the NBA draft but his
management team and the China Basketball Association (CBA) wanted him
selected by a larger city with a bigger ethnic Chinese population.

The Bucks' scouts were not even allowed to watch him train before the
draft.

Yi's management team is reportedly seeking to broker a trade that could
get the seven-foot (2.12-metre) Yi out of Milwaukee and possibly to the
Golden State Warriors who play in San Francisco.

Yao was speaking to Chinese reporters at a promotional event for the 2008
Beijing Olympics. His comments were posted on the sports website of
leading portal Sina.com and in the state press on Wednesday.

Raikkonen wins as Ferrari dominate in French GP

Kimi Raikkonen led Ferrari to a one-two finish and back into the battle
for this year's Formula One world championship on Sunday when he won the
French Grand Prix in emphatic style.

The 27-year-old Finn came home ahead of his team-mate Brazilian Felipe
Massa, 25, as the Italian team delivered their first one-two of the
season and the first in 14 races since last year's German Grand Prix.

The result prompted Raikkonen to predict a Ferrari revival after a period
in the doldrums and he said they would now be a force in the championship.

But 22-year-old British rookie Lewis Hamilton extended his lead in the
drivers' championship from 10 points to 14 by coming home third for
McLaren Mercedes-Benz.

And afterwards, Hamilton, like Raikkonen, predicted that he could win the
next race, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next Sunday.

"I am sure we can bounce back and win again," he said. "The gap today was
not what it looked."

To the delight of Italian fans, who feared that Ferrari were falling away
this season and that Raikkonen, signed from McLaren last winter, could
not deliver his best form for Ferrari, the Finn was back to his fastest
as he claimed his second win of the season.

"That felt much better," he said. "We have had some tough times but we
have to go through that sometimes. It's been hard, but we have worked
hard and the car was much better for us here today.

"We are going to have a lot more new parts next week and I am sure we can
now maintain this form. We can win again, I am sure of that, and we
usually go very well at Silverstone."

Pole sitter Massa blamed the failure of other drivers to move aside
during his second stint between the pit-stops for his disappointment in
not winning despite leading from the start for more than half of the
70-laps race.

"I was 4.8 seconds ahead after the first stint and would have won if it
was not for the traffic problems I had with other cars.

"It ruined my chances of winning, but it is great for the team, this
result, and now we can go on and try to beat McLaren again."

Hamilton said: "If you had said to me at any time that I would be heading
towards my home race as the world championship leader, I would not have
believed you. To be in this position in the team I always dreamed of
racing for is just so special for me.

"I did not expect to finish on the podium in my first race let alone
being on the podium for all of the first eight! And, yes, it is a new
experience for me to be overtaken - for the first time this season - in
Formula One, but I know that it happens. Kimi just had a much better
start than me. His was exceptional and I don't really know what happened
to mine."

Finn Raikkonen came home two seconds ahead of Massa as the Italian team
ended rivals McLaren's three race sequence of victories. The result
confirmed that McLaren may not have it all their own way in this year's
championship.

It was Raikkonen's first win since the season-opening Australian race in
Melbourne on March 18, his second of the season and the 11th of his
career and a memorable way of saying 'adieu' to the remote Magny-Cours
circuit, hosting the French race for the final time.

It meant also that after eight races this year four drivers have shared
the victories with two apiece and, for Raikkonen, it was a powerful
response to doubters who have suggested he lacked the discipline and
resolve to become a successful Ferrari driver after his move from McLaren.

Massa, who led for more than half of the race, finished second ahead of
22-year-old Hamilton.

His McLaren team-mate and chief rival defending double drivers' champion
Fernando Alonso of Spain, who started from 10th position on the grid, was
unable to fight his way through the field and finished seventh.

Hamilton had won the two previous races in Canada and the United States
and he was seeking a hat-trick, but despite his disappointment he stayed
ahead in the title race with 64 points to Alonso's 50. The other double
winners this year are Alonso, Raikkonen and Massa.

Poland's Robert Kubica finished fourth for BMW Sauber, after driving a
solid race on his return to action following his high-speed crash in
Canada three weeks ago.

His BMW team-mate German Nick Heidfeld was fifth ahead of Italian
Giancarlo Fisichella in a Renault, Alonso, who was seventh, and Briton
Jenson Button, who claimed his and his Honda team's first point of the
year in eighth place.

World number one Justine Henin brushed aside Czech teenager Nicole
Vaidisova to reach the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International
grasscourt tournament on Thursday.

Henin, the defending champion at the Wimbledon warm-up event, won 6-2 6-2
in 55 minutes.

Amelie Mauresmo, who will defend her Wimbledon title next week, recovered
from a lapse of concentration to beat Israeli sixth seed Shahar Peer 6-3
6-4.

In Friday's semi-finals, Mauresmo will play third seed Nadia Petrova who
overcame a back problem and leg cramps in the heat to beat Austrian ninth
seed Sybille Bammer 6-7 7-5 6-4 in a match that lasted just under three
hours.

Fifth seed Vaidisova, the youngest player in the draw at 18 and an
Australian Open semi-finalist in January, has a big serve but when that
started to let her down she had no other weapons to use against Henin.

She found herself 5-0 down within 20 minutes, having held only one game
point.

Vaidisova broke Henin as the Belgian top seed served for the first set at
5-1 but then surrendered her next serve to love.

Henin, who went 5-2 up in the second set, piled on the pressure as she
watched Vaidisova's serve become more erratic.

Though the Czech saved one match point she soon gave Henin a second
chance thanks to a double fault, then put a backhand into the net to
concede the match.

French Open champion Henin, aiming to win Wimbledon to complete her
collection of grand slam titles, will next play eighth seed Marion
Bartoli of France who thrashed Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva 6-1
6-0 in 71 minutes.

DOUBLE FAULTS

Bartoli, inspired by another straight-sets defeat of Dementieva in the
French Open third round earlier this month, put the Russian under
relentless pressure from the start.

Dementieva, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon last year, never looked
comfortable, struggling to get her first serve in and hitting eight
double faults.

Second seed Mauresmo, after taking the first set easily, allowed Peer to
break her to go 4-2 up in the second set.

The French world number four was pleased, however, at the manner of her
comeback.

"I lost a little bit of intensity at the beginning of that second set so
that she was able to break me and I really focused, concentrated and was
able to break her back right away," Mauresmo told a news conference.

World number 11 Petrova had three bouts of medical treatment during her
marathon against left-hander Bammer, for a back strain and thigh cramps.

The Russian had chances to finish off her match earlier, after going 5-1
up in the deciding set, but Bammer, mother of a five-year-old daughter,
saved two match points to hold serve.

Bammer then broke Petrova and held her own serve to pull back to 5-4 but
the 24-year-old Muscovite clung on to win.

"I enjoyed the fight between us," Petrova told reporters. "She is a tough
competitor."

The rapid spread of large-scale industrial livestock production focused
on a narrow range of breeds is the biggest threat to the world's farm
animal diversity, according to a report presented on Thursday to the
Commission on Genetic Resources for the UN Food and Agriculture
Organization ( FAO).

Surging global demand for meat, milk and eggs has led to heavy reliance
on high-output animals intensively bred to supply uniform products,
according to The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food
and Agriculture.

The problem is compounded by the ease with which genetic material can now
be moved around the world, said the report, which draws on information
from 169 countries.

"In the next 40 years, the world's population will rise from today's 6.2
billion to 9 billion, with all the growth occurring in the developing
countries," said FAO Assistant Director-General Alexander Muller in his
address to the commission.

"We need to increase the resilience of our food supply, by maintaining
and deploying the widest possible portfolio of genetic resources, which
are vital and irreplaceable", he said.

"Global warming is an additional threat to all genetic resources,
increasing the pressure on biodiversity," Muller added. "Yet we need
these genetic resources for the adaptation of agriculture to climate
change."

"One livestock breed a month has become extinct over the past seven
years, and time is running out for one-fifth of the world's breeds of
cattle, goats, pigs, horses and poultry," said Muller. " This report, the
first-ever global overview of livestock biodiversity and of the capacity
within countries to manage their animal genetic resources, is a wake-up
call to the world."

"Effective management of animal genetic diversity is essential to global
food security, sustainable development and the livelihoods of millions of
people," said Irene Hoffmann, Chief of FAO's Animal Production Service.

According to the report, 48 percent of the world's countries report no
national in vivo conservation programs, and 63 percent report that they
have no in vitro programs, that is, the conservation of embryos, semen or
other genetic material, with the potential to reconstitute live animals
at a later date. Similarly, in many countries, structured breeding
programs are absent or ineffective.

At this week's meeting of FAO's Commission on Genetic Resources -- the
only international institution dealing with all genetic resources in
agriculture, forestry and fisheries -- experts from around the world are
expected to endorse the findings of the report, which will be formally
launched at the International Technical Conference on Animal Genetic
Resources in Interlaken, Switzerland, in September 2007.

BAGHDAD - The four-year US military death toll in Iraq passed 3,500 after
a soldier was reported killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad. A British
soldier was also shot to death Thursday in southern Iraq, as Western
forces find themselves increasingly vulnerable under a new strategy to
take the fight to the enemy.

The British ambassador to Iraq, meanwhile, signaled his government was
ready to talk to those behind the abduction of five Britons in Baghdad
last month. Iraqi officials have said they believe the Britons were taken
by the Mahdi Army militia, which is largely loyal to the radical Shiite
cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

In a rare televised interview, al-Sadr blamed the United States for
Iraq's woes, often referring to it as "the occupier" and accusing it of
being behind the sectarian violence, the growing schism between Iraq's
majority Shiites and once-dominant Sunni Arabs and economic hardships.

"We are now facing a brutal Western assault against Islam," he said,
draped in his traditional black robe and turban. "This agenda must be
countered with a cultural resistance," he said.

The mounting US casualties, most by makeshift bombs placed in potholes on
roads or in fields where troops conduct foot patrols, come as American
troops work with Iraqi forces on the streets and in remote outposts as
part of a joint crackdown on sectarian violence.

A US soldier was killed and two others were wounded Wednesday when a
roadside bomb exploded during combat operations in a southwestern section
of Baghdad, the military said Thursday. At least 3,501 US service-members
have been killed since the beginning of the war, according to an
Associated Press count.

They include at least 23 American deaths during the first six days of
June - an average of almost four per day, a similar pace to that in May.
American troops deaths reached 127 in May, making it the third-deadliest
month since the war started in March 2003. The average is nearly double
the roughly two a day killed in June 2006.

A British soldier also was shot to death and three others were wounded
Thursday while on patrol in southern Iraq, according to Britain's
Ministry of Defense, pushing to at least 150 the number of deaths
reported by the British military.

Separately, the British ambassador to Iraq, Dominic Asquith, appealed to
the kidnappers of five Britons to release them or open negotiations.

The five - four security guards and a consultant - were abducted from the
Iraqi Finance Ministry on May 29 by some 40 heavily armed men who then
rode off with them in the direction of the sprawling Shiite district of
Sadr City.

Iraqi officials say the Mahdi Army may have grabbed the men in
retaliation for the killing by British forces of the militia's commander
in the southern city of Basra.

"I ask those holding them to release them so they may return to their
families," Asquith said. Then, in a clear offer to consider demands, he
added, "We have people here in Iraq who are ready to listen to any person
about this incident, or any person who may be holding these men and who
may wish to communicate."

The Mahdi Army, which fought US forces in 2004, has been blamed for many
of the sectarian attacks in Iraq. The US accuses Iran of fueling the
violence by providing weapons and training fighters.

On Thursday, al-Sadr said he maintains "friendship and good relations"
with Iran but rejects any interference by Tehran in Iraq's affairs.

"I must maintain friendship and good relations with Iran but nothing
else," he said.

The anti-American cleric dodged a question about his disappearance from
public view during which he was believed to have been in Iran.

The interview on Iraqi state television was believed to be al-Sadr's
first since he re-emerged in public nearly two weeks ago. The program,
which aired Thursday, was taped Sunday at his office in the holy city of
Najaf, according to his aides. Al-Sadr had dropped out of sight at the
start of a US-Iraqi security crackdown in February.

Despite the crackdown, bombings, shootings, mortar attacks and
execution-style killings left at least 63 Iraqis dead nationwide
Thursday. They included 32 unidentified men who were handcuffed,
blindfolded and shot to death in Baghdad - the apparent victims of
so-called sectarian death squads usually run by Shiite militias like the
Mahdi Army.

MOSCOW - President Vladimir Putin called himself the world's only
"absolute and pure democrat" in an interview published Monday, and
launched scathing attacks on the US and Europe ahead of this week's Group
of Eight summit.

At the same time, the 54-year-old Putin hinted that he may not be ready
to leave the public stage after all when his second term expires next
year. "I am far from pension age and it would be absurd just to sit at
home doing nothing," he told a group of reporters invited to dinner over
the weekend.

Despite Russia's agreement last month to tone down the rhetoric, Putin's
statements exposed vast gaps between Russia and the West ahead of this
week's Group of Eight summit. He called Britain's decision to demand the
extradition of the man suspected of killing former KGB agent Alexander
Litvinenko with a radioactive poison an act of "stupidity."

The interview touched on much that the rest of the world finds disturbing
about Putin's Russia: the backsliding on democracy, the increasing
assertion of military power, the general perception of a leader who feels
immune to international criticism.

To the many Westerners who say he has rolled back Russia's democratic
reforms, Putin responded with the assertion that he is the world's one
true champion of democracy.

"I am an absolute and pure democrat," Putin said. "But you know what the
misfortune is? Not even a misfortune but a real tragedy? It's that I am
alone, there simply aren't others like this in the world."

The transcript noted that Putin laughed when making that comment,
suggesting he was joking. A few moments later he added: "After the death
of Mahatma Gandhi, there's nobody to talk to."

Sandwiched between his acid criticisms and ironic assertions was a brief
criticism of the West.

"We look at what has been created in North America - horror: torture,
homelessness, Guantanamo, detention without courts or investigation," he
said.

"You see what's going on in Europe: harsh treatment of demonstrators, the
use of rubber bullets, tear gas in one capital, the killing of
demonstrators in the streets in another," he added, in an apparent
reference to the death of an ethnic Russian in the Estonian capital
during protests over the removal of a Soviet-era war memorial.

Rather than try to soothe nerves before the G-8 summit in Germany, Putin
repeated, and even amplified, recent Kremlin criticism of the United
States - including his allegation in February that the United States was
engaging in a "hyper-use of power," and Russian officials' denunciation
of purported Western attempts to destabilize Russia by funding
pro-democracy groups.

The Russian president's comments came despite last month's agreement
between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Condoleezza
Rice to tone down the rhetoric on both sides.

Much of the toughest talk from the Kremlin has focused on US plans to
build a missile-defense system in Europe, which Washington insists is
aimed at preventing attacks by rogue states such as Iran and North Korea
rather than Russia.

Putin renewed the verbal offensive in his weekend interview, in chilling
comments that evoked the balance-of-terror language of the Cold War.

"We are being told the anti-missile defense system is targeted against
something that does not exist. Doesn't it seem funny to you, to say the
least?" a clearly irritated Putin said.

"If a part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States
appears in Europe and, in the opinion of our military specialists will
threaten us, then we will have to take appropriate steps in response,"
Putin said. "What kind of steps? We will have to have new targets in
Europe."

These could be targeted with "ballistic or cruise missiles or maybe a
completely new system."

National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, asked aboard Air Force One
about Putin's comments on the missile shield, said there has been "some
escalation in the rhetoric."

"We think that that is not helpful. We would like to have a constructive
dialogue with Russia on this issue. We have had it in the past," Hadley
said.

Russia's relations with the West also are troubled by its refusal to turn
over Andrei Lugovoi, the man whom Britain says it has enough evidence to
charge in last year's fatal poisoning of former KGB agent Alexander
Litvinenko.

Russia refuses to turn over Lugovoi, saying its constitution forbids
extradition of Russian citizens to face prosecution abroad. Putin called
Britain's demand "stupidity."

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The gunman who killed 30 people at a Virginia Tech
building was "well-prepared" to continue his shooting spree with more
than 200 additional rounds of ammunition, a state panel was told Monday.

Police found 203 live rounds in Norris Hall, where Seung-Hui Cho killed
25 students and five faculty members before committing suicide on April
16, State Police Superintendent William Flaherty told a panel
investigating the massacre. Cho also shot two other students elsewhere.

"He was well-prepared to continue on," Flaherty said.

Cho fired 174 shots from two handguns on the second floor in a span of
nine minutes, taking his own life at 9:51 a.m. as police on the stairwell
approached the floor, Flaherty said.

Asked to describe Cho's shooting method, Flaherty said, "I would describe
it as very deliberate. There seemed to be nothing panicky at all."

Earlier, after hearing testimony from a Virginia Tech attorney that
privacy laws prohibit release of students' mental health and other
records, panel member Tom Ridge said the group needs to find a way to
gain access to Cho's records.

"We'd be remiss if we didn't do a real deep dive into this area," said
Ridge, the former US Homeland Security chief.

Cho was found "mentally ill and in need of hospitalization" in December
2005, according to court papers. A judge ordered him into involuntary
outpatient treatment, but there is no indication that Cho complied.

University counsel Kay Heidbreder said student privacy rights prevent
release of most records. Even within the university, the records cannot
be shared among departments, she said.

Ridge said that he understood that privacy rights are necessary, but that
he believes in this case the panel should do what it can to get Cho's
records.

Panel chairman W. Gerald Massengill said the group would be willing to
receive the information in closed session if necessary.

Cho's family, which would have access to the records, has cooperated so
far, Flaherty told reporters.

Also Monday, the panel visited the two buildings where the shootings
occurred. The tour included a more than two-hour private briefing,
featuring a presentation by Virginia Tech police chief Wendell Flinchum,
who led the initial response to the shootings.

Such information will not be made public until police meet with victims'
families, Flaherty said.

It was helpful to hear about the shootings from people who were there and
to view the shooting sites, Massengill said.

"I've seen and heard a lot in my career," said Massengill, a former State
Police superintendent who oversaw the agency's response to the Sept. 11
attack on the Pentagon and the 2002 Washington-area sniper attacks. "This
is almost undescribable."

The panel toured West Ambler Johnston Hall, the dormitory where the first
two students were killed, and the classrooms of Norris Hall.

The briefing and tour were closed under provisions of the Virginia
Freedom of Information Act that protect students' privacy and briefings
by law enforcement agencies. Reporters for several news organizations had
objected, saying it did not appear the grounds for closing the meeting
were properly applied.

During the open portion of the meeting, Massengill asked Tech president
Charles Steger whether he thought the contents of the first e-mail the
school sent to students and employees should have been more specific. The
mass e-mail sent at 9:26 a.m. - more than two hours after the first
shooting - said police were investigating a shooting at West Ambler
Johnston and warned students to be cautious and contact police about
anything suspicious.

Massengill asked Steger whether the e-mail should have said, "We've had a
shooting and the shooter has not been apprehended."

Said Steger: "The most prevalent question I get is that question."

He said university officials were worried about causing panic on campus.
Steger also noted that police initially thought the shooting was a
domestic dispute, and officers already were questioning a person of
interest.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine created the eight-member panel, asking it to gather
information about the gunman, how the events unfolded, and how the state
and other agencies responded.

Additional meetings are set for next month. Kaine had said he hoped the
panel could complete its review before classes resume in August. The
university also is conducting its own review, which it expects to
complete by late August.

Banco Delta Asia SARL, which is challenging a US ruling barring banks
from doing business with the Macau lender because of its ties to North
Korea, said the US encouraged its dealings with North Korea.

Stanley Au, chairman of the lender's parent, Delta Asia Financial Group,
said in a statement that he met with US government officials in 1994
after reporting that a North Korean client deposited counterfeit US
dollars.

The officials "said that they would like us to continue to deal with
them, as it was better that we conducted this business rather than
another financial entity that may not be so cooperative with the United
States," Au said in the statement, released by law firm Jones Day.

Delta Asia Financial filed a petition contesting the US Treasury
Department ruling, saying there is no evidence it let North Korea launder
money. The bank holds $25 million in previously frozen North Korea funds
that the country demanded be released before implementing an agreement to
shut its nuclear reactor. Talks on transferring the funds are under way.

"We are reviewing the petition that has been submitted," US Treasury
spokeswoman Molly Millerwise said. "Our designation of BDA was based on a
lengthy process and strong administrative record, and we continue to
stand by our action."

Abe arrived here Thursday morning to hold his first summit in the United
States with President George W. Bush since the Japanese premier took
office in September.

Shortly after his arrival in Washington, the Japanese leader renewed his
expression of sympathy for Asian women driven into brothels by Japan's
military during World War II while he pledged to step up its alliance
with the United States, according to the report.

"As a person and as prime minister, I feel sympathy from the bottom of my
heart to former comfort women, who experienced hardships," Abe told
members of the US Congress.

"I feel deeply sorry that they were forced to be placed in such extremely
painful situations," Abe told a small group of Republicans and Democrats
on Capitol Hill, according to a Japanese government official.

Abe sparked controversy last month by saying there was no evidence the
imperial army directly coerced thousands of "comfort women" into brothels
across Asia during World War II.

The prime minister has since stressed he stands by Japan's landmark 1993
apology to the women. Bush praised Abe's "candor" on the issue in a
telephone conversation early this month, according to the White House.

During the meeting with US lawmakers, Abe said he hoped to build on a
strategic relationship that grew under Abe's predecessor, Junichiro
Koizumi, one of Bush's closest allies, a personal friend, and a staunch
backer of the Iraq war.

"The Japan-US alliance is an indispensable and unshakable one," Abe said.

"It is vitally important for both Japan and the United States to
(maintain) peace and stability of the Asian region, where unstable
elements such as the Korean peninsula still exist," he said.

"It is necessary to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance. I would
like to work together with the United States to continue dealing with
various issues such as North Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan."

The congressional group, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, praised
Japan's contribution to the reconstruction of Iraq and called on both
Tokyo and Washington to jointly tackle issues related to the
international community, according to the Japanese official.

During planned talks at the White House and the Camp David presidential
retreat, Abe was to seek reassurances from the US president on North
Korea, particularly on the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by
Pyongyang.

"I will express my stance with an iron will of seeking a solution to the
abduction issue," said Abe, who rejected a US-backed aid-for-disarmament
deal with North Korea due to the kidnapping dispute.

On a brisk Thursday night, Abe and his wife, Akie, walked with Bush and
First Lady Laura Bush from the Blair House presidential guest residence
to the White House across the street for dinner.

The Japanese inspired menu included Chesapeake Bay Crab with Yuzu
Reduction, Pan-Seared Baby Shiitakes, Soft Duck Egg and Daikon Slaw, a
White House statement said.

At the meeting Friday at the US presidential retreat in Camp David,
Maryland, the two leaders are set to dine on an all-American lunch of
controversial US beef -- in the form of cheeseburgers.

Japanese curbs on US beef are one of the stickier trade issues the
leaders were expected to discuss.

Japan this week agreed to ease its strict inspection regime on imports of
US beef, which it had imposed over concerns about mad-cow disease.

TIPP CITY, Ohio - US President Bush said on Thursday that mass shootings
are a reminder that people must be willing to raise a red flag about
others' disturbing behavior.

"One of the lessons of these tragedies is to make sure that when people
see somebody or know somebody who is exhibiting abnormal behavior, you do
something about it, to suggest that somebody take a look," the president
said during an appearance at a high school here.

His war on terror speech came after a moment of silence for the victims
of the Monday shootings at Virginia Tech in which 33 people, including
the shooter, died.

In a question-and-answer session, the president was asked by a student
what he thought should be done to ensure safety in schools.

He said he didn't want to draw conclusions from the Virginia case because
"they're still digging out the facts." But he suggested that concerns
about privacy violations, while understandable, may be preventing people
from taking needed action.

Gunman Cho Seung-Hui had been accused of sending unwanted messages to two
women. He was taken to a psychiatric hospital on a magistrate's orders
and was pronounced a danger to himself, but was released for outpatient
treatment. Also, Cho's twisted, violence-filled writings and menacing,
uncommunicative demeanor had disturbed professors and students so much
that he was removed from one English class and was repeatedly urged to
get counseling. A video rant Cho mailed to NBC in the middle of his
Virginia Tech rampage only added to the disturbing psychological portrait.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said she did not know whether Bush
had seen any of the video. But it was clear he was aware of it.

"If you are a parent and your child is, you know, doing strange things on
the Internet, pay attention to it and not be afraid to ask for help and
not be afraid to say `I am concerned about what I am seeing," Bush said.
"I think it's very important for us not to comment until it's all said
and done, but that other cases there have been warning signals - that if
an adult for example had taken the signals seriously, perhaps tragedy
could have been avoided."

Bush said the reeling community in Blacksburg should take heart from its
support in the rest of the country.

"It really speaks to the strength of this country, doesn't it, that total
strangers here in Ohio are willing to hold up people in Virginia in
prayer?" he said.

WASHINGTON: US President George W. Bush said on Monday that the mass
shooting at Virginia Tech University affects every student across the
nation.

"Schools should be places of safety, sanctuary and learning," Bush said
in reaction to the deaths of more than 30 people on the campus. "When
that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American
classroom, in every American community."

Bush spoke with Governor Timothy M. Kaine and Virginia Tech President
Charles Steger.

"I told them that Laura and I and many across our nation are praying for
the victims and all the members of university community that have been
devastated by this terrible tragedy," Bush said in the Diplomatic Room of
the White House.

"Today our nation grieves with those who have lose loved ones at Virginia
Tech," he said. "We hold the victims in our hearts. We lift them up in
our prayers and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering
today."'

The Virginia governor said yesterday it was too early to draw conclusions
about how campus authorities handled the deadly shooting rampage, while
some questioned a lack of strong warnings following the first burst of
gunfire.

Kaine made his remarks yesterday morning in Tokyo before going to an
airport to return to the US. He had arrived on Monday to attend events in
Japan, but apparently cut his trip short because of the shootings.

"It is a very tragic day for us in Virginia. My reaction was just shock.
My first thought was just how tragic this was for the university," Kaine
said.

Asked if he thought there was any mismanagement on the part of the school
in informing the students after the first round of shootings, Kaine said,
"the investigation as to what happened is ongoing and I think it's
important that we not draw any premature conclusions."

Kaine said he plans to attend a convocation planned at the campus
yesterday and stay there until today to deal with the aftermath.

NATANZ, Iran - Iran announced a dramatic expansion of uranium enrichment
Monday, saying it has begun operating 3,000 centrifuges �� nearly 10
times the previously known number �� in defiance of U.N. demands it halt
its nuclear program or face increased sanctions.

U.S. experts say 3,000 centrifuges are in theory enough to produce a
nuclear weapon, perhaps within a year. But they doubted Iran really had
so many up and running, a difficult technical feat given the country's
spotty success with a much smaller number.

Instead, the announcement may aim to increase support at home amid
growing criticism of hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and to boost
Iran's hand with the West by presenting its program as established, said
Michael Levi, a nonproliferation expert at the Washington-based Council
on Foreign Relations.

"From a political perspective, it's more important to have (3,000
centrifuges) in place than to have them run properly," Levi told The
Associated Press. "We have an unfortunate habit to take Iran at its word
when they make scary announcements."

The White House and Europe criticized the latest announcement.

"Iran continues to defy the international community and further isolate
itself by expanding its nuclear program, rather than suspending uranium
enrichment," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security
Council.

Iran is known to have had 328 centrifuges operating at its Natanz
enrichment facility in central Iran. For months, it has been saying it
plans to launch an expanded program of 3,000, likely to be set up in a
large underground area at Natanz to protect them from air strikes.

"I declare that as of today, our dear country has joined the nuclear club
of nations and can produce nuclear fuel on an industrial scale,"
Ahmadinejad said in a speech during a ceremony at Natanz marking the
one-year anniversary of the first successful enrichment of uranium there.

His comments suggested Iran was able to produce enough enriched uranium
to fuel a nuclear reactor consistently, but he did not announce the start
of the 3,000 centrifuges.

Asked by reporters at the ceremony if Iran has begun injecting uranium
gas into 3,000 centrifuges for enrichment, Iran's top nuclear negotiator,
Ali Larijani replied, "Yes." He did not say specifically whether all were
working.

In the enrichment process, uranium gas is pumped into centrifuges, which
spin and purify the gas. Enriched to a low degree, the result is fuel for
a reactor, but to a high degree it creates the material for a nuclear
warhead.

The United States and its allies accuse Iran of seeking to develop
weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

The announcement was a strong show of defiance of the United Nations,
which imposed limited sanctions in December and strengthened them
slightly last month because of Iran's refusal to suspend enrichment. The
U.N. Security Council has set a deadline of late May for Iran to halt the
program, warning it will gradually ratchet up the punishment.

Larijani warned that if the U.N. imposes further sanctions, Iran may
reconsider how much it cooperates with the U.N. nuclear watchdog group
under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The International Atomic
Energy Agency has been conducting inspections at Natanz and other nuclear
sites.

"The European side has made the NPT ineffective by its behavior, but we
are not interested in a such a thing. But when we face their harsh
attitude, there is a possibility of making another decision under the
pressure of the parliament," Larijani was quoted as saying on the state
broadcasting company's Web site.

The Iranian parliament last year gave the government permission to reduce
cooperation with the IAEA in case of sanctions.

The Vienna-based IAEA had no immediate comment on Monday's announcement.

The move showed Iran was "definitively going in the wrong direction,"
said the Foreign Ministry in Germany, which currently holds the European
Union presidency.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he hoped Iran would "engage in
dialogue. ... It is very important for any member country to fully comply
with the Security Council resolution."

Larijani repeated Iran's stance that it is open to negotiations with the
West and is willing to offer assurances that its program is peaceful. But
he said the West must accept its nuclear program as a fact, rejecting a
halt in enrichment as a precondition to talks.

So far, sanctions have been limited to a freeze of assets of some Iranian
companies linked to nuclear and missile programs and a call for nations
to ban travel by 15 Iranian security and government officials.

But Gen. Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, an Iranian Revolutionary Guard general
who is on the U.N. list for travel restrictions, returned on Monday from
a six-day visit to Russia and boasted his trip showed "the
ineffectiveness of the resolution." Moscow confirmed the visit and said
it was not obliged by the sanctions resolution to ban him from travel.

The ceremonies at Natanz appeared aimed at drumming up support at home
for Iran's position in the nuclear confrontation with the West. Across
Iran, school bells rang on Monday to mark the "national day of nuclear
energy."

Iran is also facing bitterness from Britain and the United States over
its 13-day detention of 15 British sailors and marines. The 15 seized by
Revolutionary Guards off the Iraqi coast were released on Wednesday.
After returning home, they said they were put under psychological
pressure by their captors to force them to "confess" to being in Iranian
waters when captured, angering many in Britain.

The British government expressed concern over Iran's announcement Monday
and called on it to suspend enrichment immediately.

"The international community stands together in ensuring that Iran does
not develop the means to acquire nuclear weapons," the British Foreign
Office said.

David Albright, a former U.N. nuclear inspector, said 3,000 centrifuges
would be enough to build a nuclear warhead within a year.

But "it would be very hard to believe" that Iran has been able to enlarge
its centrifuge cascade so dramatically, he said. "It all hinges on
whether Iran will be able to get the machines working together" at a
constant rate.

Levi said Iran has only been able to run its two small cascades of 164
centrifuges "perhaps 20 percent of the time."

Both Levi and Albright said 3,000 centrifuges could not produce enough
fuel to keep a single reactor going.

"Iran would need approximately 25,000 of its centrifuges operating at one
time to produce enough fuel for a single light water reactor," Levi said.

LONDON - Britain examined options Sunday for new dialogue with Tehran
over the seized crew of 15 sailors and marines, as a poll suggested most
Britons back the government's goal of resolving the standoff through
diplomacy.

Government and defense officials refused to discuss a report that claimed
a Royal Navy captain or commodore would be sent to Tehran as a special
envoy to negotiate the return of the personnel.

The official would deliver an assurance that British naval crews would
never deliberately enter Iranian waters without permission, the Sunday
Telegraph newspaper reported.

Britain's Foreign Office and Ministry of Defense said they would not
comment on negotiations, or on options being considered. "We will
continue to conduct our diplomatic discussions in private," a Foreign
Office spokesman said on the government's customary condition of
anonymity.

But Transport Minister Douglas Alexander said Britain was engaged in
"exploring the potential for dialogue with the Iranians."

"The responsible way forward is to continue the often unglamorous, but
important and quiet diplomatic work to get our personnel home," Alexander
told the British Broadcasting Corp.'s Sunday AM program.

A Defense Ministry spokeswoman declined to comment on claims officials
had lost optimism of a quick end to the standoff, saying speculation
about diplomatic efforts threatened to hinder progress.

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett appeared to soften rhetoric
against Iran Saturday �� though she stopped far short of the apology
sought by many in Iran.

"I think everyone regrets that this position has arisen," Beckett said in
Bremen, Germany, before returning to England. "What we want is a way out
of it."

The Foreign Office and Blair's Downing Street office said it welcomed
U.S. President Bush's intervention �� calling Saturday for the release of
the sailors and marines and labeling their capture by Tehran "inexcusable
behavior."

"Iran must give back the hostages," Bush said. "They're innocent, they
did nothing wrong, and they were summarily plucked out of waters."

Eight British sailors and seven marines were detained by Iranian naval
units March 23 while patrolling for smugglers near the mouth of the Shatt
al-Arab, a waterway that has long been a disputed dividing line between
Iraq and Iran.

Tehran says the crew was in Iranian waters, but Britain insists its
troops were on the Iraqi side of the maritime border.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called world powers "arrogant" for
failing to apologize.

"Instead of apologizing over trespassing by British forces, the world
arrogant powers issue statements and deliver speeches," Iran's official
IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying during a speech in the
southeastern city of Andinmeshk.

A poll published in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper found that 66 percent
of respondents trusted Blair and Beckett to resolve the crisis, while 28
percent did not. Only 7 percent thought the government should be
preparing to use military force.

Pollster ICM interviewed 762 adults by telephone March 30 and 31. The
margin of error is plus or minus four percentage points.

Blair warns Iran standoff could escalate

LONDON - Prime Minister Tony Blair warned Tuesday that his government
could make public evidence that a British navy crew was in Iraqi waters
when it was captured by Iran, saying he was prepared to take the standoff
to a "different phase" if diplomacy fails to win their release.

Iran said the 15 British sailors and marines were being treated well, but
refused to say where they were being held, or rule out the possibility
that they could be brought to trial for allegedly entering Iranian waters.

"I hope we manage to get them to realize they have to release them,"
Blair said in an interview with GMTV. "If not, then this will move into a
different phase."

Blair's spokesman said the prime minister was not hinting either at the
possible expulsion of Iranian diplomats or military action, but that
Britain may have to make public evidence proving the Britons were seized
in Iraqi - not Iranian - waters, if there is no swift release of the
sailors.

Releasing such evidence could have "an upside and a downside" because it
could show the Iranian ships strayed into Iraqi territory and provoke a
diplomatic row between the neighbors, the spokesman said on condition of
anonymity in line with policy.

Britain and the United States have said the sailors and marines were
intercepted Friday after they completed a search of a civilian vessel in
the Iraqi part of the Shatt al-Arab waterway, where the border between
Iran and Iraq has been disputed for centuries.

There were fears in Britain that the fate of the 15 could get caught up
in the political tensions between Iran and the West, including the
dispute over Iran's nuclear program and accusations of Iranian help to
Shiite militants in Iraq.

On Tuesday, the US Navy began its largest demonstration of force in the
Persian Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with warplanes from two
aircraft carriers flying simulated attack maneuvers off the coast of Iran.

US commanders insisted the exercises were not a direct response to the
seizure of the British sailors and marines, but they also made clear that
the flexing of the Navy's military might was intended as a warning to
Iran.

Meanwhile, the US military denied reports Tuesday that Iran fired a
missile at a US ship in the Persian Gulf. The rumors of an attack had
sent oil prices soaring more than 8 percent in after-hours trading. Lt.
Cmdr. Charlie Brown of the US Navy 5th Fleet said all ships in the Gulf
had been checked and the rumors were untrue.

The British government on Tuesday also denied it was involved in any
action in the region.

"There have certainly been no developments on our side in the last few
hours," a Foreign Office spokeswoman in London said, on condition of
anonymity in line with government policy.

Also Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs Committee in the US House of
Representatives approved a resolution demanding the release of the
British soldiers.

In London, Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett called Iran's foreign
minister for the second time and demanded the Britons' swift release in
"very robust terms", the Foreign Office said.

Blair's spokesman did not specify if Britain had set a deadline for the
naval crew's release but said negotiations would not be "indefinite."

He also refused to say if satellite images or GPS coordinates had been
shown to Iranian authorities and declined to reveal which territorial
boundaries in the waterway Britain recognizes.

Iran has said it is questioning the British sailors and marines to
determine if their alleged entry into Iranian waters was "intentional or
unintentional" before deciding what to do with them - a sign Tehran could
be seeking a way out of the standoff.

The dispute helped drive up international oil prices Monday, but they
fell Tuesday, reflecting hopes of a peaceful resolution.

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran claimed Saturday that 15 British sailors and marines
had confessed to entering its waters in an act of "blatant aggression".

The British Foreign Office summoned Iran's ambassador for the second time
in two days, saying an under-secretary had spent more than an hour in
"frank and civil" talks demanding the safe return of the sailors and
Royal Marines, and seeking assurances about their welfare and access to
British consular officials.

Iran's top military official, Gen. Ali Reza Afshar, said the sailors and
marines were moved to Tehran and under interrogation "confessed to
illegal entry" and an "aggression into the Islamic Republic of Iran's
waters." Afshar did not say what would happen to the sailors.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini accused the
British of "violating the sovereign boundaries" of Iran, calling the
entry a "blatant aggression."

He accused Britain of trying to cover up the incursion, saying it should
"refrain from putting the blame on others."

The UN Security Council, meanwhile, unanimously voted to impose new
sanctions against Iran for its refusal to stop enriching uranium -- a
move intended to show Tehran that defiance over its nuclear program will
leave it increasingly isolated.

British opposition lawmakers called on the government not to allow Iran
to use the capture of the military personnel as a tool in the nuclear
dispute.

"The United Kingdom will not be blackmailed. Iran has a choice: to act
responsibly; or face greater isolation," said Menzies Campbell, leader of
the opposition Liberal Democrats.

But the British government appeared to be avoiding harsh language in its
public statements as it continued to gather information about exactly
what had happened and why.

The British sailors had searched a merchant ship Friday morning when they
and their two inflatable boats were intercepted by Iranian vessels near
the disputed Shatt al-Arab waterway, US and British officials said. The
Iranians surrounded them and escorted them away at gunpoint.

Britain immediately demanded the return of the eight Royal Navy sailors
and seven Royal Marines -- at least one of who was a woman -- and denied
they had strayed into Iranian waters while searching for smugglers off
Iraq's coast.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett and the Ministry of Defense said the
troops were in Iraqi waters when they were seized.

Iraq's military commander of the country's territorial waters, Brig. Gen.
Hakim Jassim, told AP Television News that Iraqi fishermen had reported
that the British boats were "in an area that is out of Iraqi control."

In June 2004, six British marines and two sailors were captured, then
paraded blindfolded on Iranian television. They admitted they had entered
Iranian waters illegally but were released unharmed after three days.

Iranian hard-liners have already called for the 15 Britons to be held
until Iran wins concessions from the West.

Several conservative student groups urged the Iranian government not to
release the sailors until five Iranians detained by US forces in Iraq
earlier this year are freed and UN's new sanctions against Iran are
canceled. Some 500 Iranian students gathered on the shore near where the
soldiers were captured, shouting "Death to Britain" and "Death to
America," the semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

With tensions already running high, the United States has bolstered its
naval forces in the Persian Gulf in a show of strength directed at Iran.
There is concern that with so much military hardware in the Gulf, a small
incident could escalate dangerously.

Afshar, the Iranian officer, warned the United States would not be able
to control the consequences if it attacks Iran.

"The United States and its allies know that if they make any mistake in
their calculations ... they will not be able to control the dimensions
and limit the duration of a war," Afshar said.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, warned this week that
Western countries "must know that the Iranian nation and authorities will
use all their capacities to strike enemies that attack."

The Britons were seized in an area where the boundaries of Iraqi and
Iranian waters have long been disputed. A 1975 treaty set the center of
the Shatt al-Arab -- the 125-mile-long channel known in Iran as the
Arvand River -- as the border.

But Saddam Hussein canceled that treaty five years later and invaded
Iran, triggering an eight-year war. Virtually all of Iraq's oil is
exported through an oil terminal near the mouth of the channel.

Iran and the new Iraqi government have not signed a new treaty on their
sovereignty over the waterway.

The seized sailors, from the British frigate HMS Cornwall, are part of a
task force that maintains security in Iraqi waters under authority of the
UN Security Council. Cornwall's commander, Commodore Nick Lambert, said
he hoped the detention was a "simple mistake" stemming from the unclear
border.

US, DPRK 'reach deal on frozen funds'

The United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)
have resolved a dispute over the latter's funds frozen in a Macao bank,
Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan told a group of visiting Japanese lawmakers
about the US-DPRK deal, Xinhua said, without providing details.

The news came on the eve of the new round of Six-Party Talks, which
starts today.

Some $25 million in DPRK deposits have been frozen in Banco Delta Asia
(BDA) since Washington blacklisted the tiny, privately-run Macao-based
bank in 2005 on suspicion the funds were connected to money-laundering or
counterfeiting.

Washington promised to resolve the issue by mid-March as part of an
agreement last month on DPRK nuclear disarmament.

In a related development, US Deputy Assistant Treasury Secretary Daniel
Glaser said after his arrival in Beijing yesterday afternoon: "We had a
good meeting in Macao with the Macao monitoring authorities."

The chief negotiator of the Republic of Korea Chun Yung-woo also said
yesterday that the issue of the frozen funds was expected to be resolved
soon.

Chun made the remarks in Beijing after an hour-long meeting of the
denuclearization working group, which started its first meeting on
Saturday at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

The issue of frozen funds has the potential to derail the agreement
reached last month by the six parties to make the Korean Peninsula
nuclear free.

On Saturday, DPRK nuclear envoy Kim Kye-gwan said Pyongyang would not
shut down its main nuclear reactor until the funds were released.

He said the DPRK had already fulfilled its obligations including inviting
the UN nuclear watchdog to visit Pyongyang and holding separate working
group meetings with the United States and Japan.

Analyst say the mistrust between the US and the DPRK is still the core of
the problem.

"As long as this mistrust remains, it is going to be a very slow process
but it is encouraging that the US is now engaged in active diplomacy,"
said Derek Mitchell, senior fellow with Center for Strategic &
International Studies.

Shi Yinhong, professor at Renmin University of China, noted that
fulfilling its commitments is in Pyongyang's interest and there is so far
no signal that the DPRK would break its promises in the initial action
period.

NEW YORK - What could a Chinese dumpling maker and Mexican telecom mogul
possibly have in common? They're among a record number of wealthy people
who held the title of billionaire over the past year. The tally of
billionaires around the globe reached a high of 946, their combined
wealth growing 35 percent to $3.5 trillion, according to Forbes
magazine's 2007 rankings of the world's richest people.

The rich cashed in on strong equity markets, real estate and commodity
prices worldwide, according to Forbes billionaires co-editor Luisa Kroll.

"It's just been kind of an extraordinary year for markets worldwide," she
said.

Leading the list are two men who manage to keep getting richer as they
give more and more money away. Microsoft founder Bill Gates ranked No. 1
for the 13th straight year, beating out friend and fellow philanthropist
Warren Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Gates's fortune rose $6 billion to $56 billion last year, while Buffett
garnered in an additional $10 billion to boost his net worth to $52
billion.

Only five Americans ranked in the top 20, though they account for 44
percent of the overall list.

Breathing down Buffett's neck was Mexican telecom giant Carlos Slim Helu,
who added $19 billion to his existing fortune, the largest one-year gain
over the past decade. With $49 billion to his name, Helu was just $3
billion shy of the No. 2 spot.

Starbucks Corp. chairman Howard Schultz and former Disney CEO Michael
Eisner joined the ranks of the world's richest for the first time, behind
new faces Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, Canadian co-chiefs of
Blackberry maker Research In Motion Ltd.

Self-made mogul Li Wei, founder of Synear Food Holding, made the list for
the first time along with a dozen other Chinese newcomers. Her company,
one of the country's largest producers of frozen food, including sweet

Japan surrendered its title as Asia's leading billionaire locale to
India, which boasts 36 megarich on the list. Russia contributed 53
billionaires and now challenges Germany as home to the most billionaires
outside the United States.

Among three Indians in the wealthiest top 20 are Mukesh and Anil Ambani,
feuding brothers who got even richer after dividing their fortunes in
2005. Mukesh Ambani ranked 14th with a $20.1 billion fortune, while
brother Anil came in four places lower at No. 18 with his $18.2 billion.

The methodology of the rankings remains similar to previous years, Kroll
said. The magazine confirmed the worth of an individual's holdings in
public companies by using the Feb. 9 closing stock price, and estimated
the value of private companies by evaluating comparable public firms in
the industry and by consulting with experts in the field.
